Challenge Description

Objective: To test a mechanical engineer’s computer-aided design (CAD) skills and their ability to design and build a functional robot.

Instructions:

  • Using a CAD software of your choice, design a robot that can perform a specific task (e.g. pick and place objects, move in a specific pattern, etc.).
  • The robot should be designed for cost-effectiveness and ease of assembly.
  • The robot should be able to be controlled by a microcontroller or similar device.
  • The robot should be built using off-the-shelf parts and materials, and the total cost should not exceed $500.
  • Once the robot is built, it should be tested virtually to ensure that it can perform the task it was designed for.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • The design of the robot will be evaluated based on its functionality, cost-effectiveness, and ease of assembly.
  • The robot’s performance will be evaluated based on its ability to perform the task it was designed for.
  • The documentation of the design process and the final build will also be taken into account.

Submission:

  • A detailed report on the design process, including CAD drawings and assembly instructions.
  • A video demonstration of the robot performing its task.
  • A list of all the parts and materials used in the build, along with their cost.
  • Time limit: 1 month

Challenge terms and conditions

Terms and Conditions for Participants in the “Design and Build a Robot” Challenge:

  1. Participants must use a CAD software of their choice to design their robot and must submit the CAD files and assembly instructions as part of their final submission.
  2. Participants must use off-the-shelf parts and materials to build their robot, and the total cost of the build should not exceed $500.
  3. Participants must submit a detailed report on the design process, including CAD drawings and assembly instructions, a video demonstration of the robot performing its task, and a list of all the parts and materials used in the build, along with their cost.
  4. Participants must adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations when building and testing their robot.
  5. Participants must agree to have their design and build judged by a panel of experts, and the decision of the panel will be final.
  6. Participants must agree to have their design and build shared with the public, and to have their name and contact information shared with the public if they are selected as the winner.
  7. Participants must agree to have their design and build used by the organizer of the challenge for promotional purposes.
  8. Participants must agree to the terms and conditions outlined in this document in order to participate in the challenge.
  9. The time limit for the challenge is one month, participants must submit their work before the deadline.
  10. The organizers of the challenge reserve the right to disqualify any participant who does not adhere to these terms and conditions.
